Positively Criminal with DEAD CERT

SET VISIT

Last Monday, TRIPWIRE was lucky enough to be invited on set for new British vampire gangster film, Dead Cert. Shooting took place at a warehouse in Dagenham in Essex (the Eastern border of London for our non-English visitors.) While it is a film with a small budget (less than a million pounds), from what we saw it should look and feel like they spent a lot more on it.

The cast includes former EastEnders actors Craig Fairbrass and Billy Murray (who also happened to be one of the voices in the new Call of Duty video game), Andrew Tiernan (from ITV’s Cracker and more recently Murderland) plus cameos from Jason Flemyng (Benjamin Button) and Stephen Berkoff. With such a loaded cast the film should make more of an impact than your average low budget British movie.

Myself and Andy Colman spent all day on set, watching a couple of scenes being shot and we chatted to the main stars Fairbrass, Murray (who is also one of the producers on the film) and its director Steven Lawson. The nightclub set looked pretty impressive and this movie, which basically pits East End gangsters against vampires, should be an enjoyable experience when it hits cinemas next year.

Here’s a few shots I took while I was there…

TRIPWIRE Visits Carey and Perkins

Monday, August 10th, 2009

8/10/09 (LONDON) By Joel Meadows
Recently TRIPWIRE went to see Mike Carey and Mike Perkins signing at central London comic shop Orbital.

Mike Carey is doing fantastic work on Vertigo’s The Unwritten series and his Felix Castor series of novels is truly compelling. Meanwhile Mike Perkins did a sterling job as inker and occasional artist on Ed Brubaker’s Captain America run and has also done work on titles like Marvel’s Union Jack. Since Mike Perkins lives in the United States he doesn’t come over to the UK that often so this was a rare treat. The turnout was good and it was always pleasant to catch up with both Mikes.

Orbital has always been a supporter of Tripwire so it’s good to see that the shop is flourishing. Also, Orbital has opened up a place where British comics stalwart Mike Lake, formerly co-founder of Titan and Forbidden Planet, is selling film posters and comic-related stuff called Shaking Street Gallery, with his partner Simon Dwyer. They have some amazing posters and paraphernalia as part of it is Mike’s own collection.

Here are some photos from the event and of the Gallery…

TRIPWIRE Visits Titmouse

Friday, August 7th, 2009

8/09/09 (LOS ANGELES) By Andy Grossberg

First of all, this is just a small part of the coverage we’re going to unspool about these guys in the coming weeks and months. They have just too much cool stuff going on and they have too many cool people working for them. So, completists keep checking back occasionally as we go along because specific show or person details won’t show up until the relevant reviews or interviews are done–and the overall profile might wait until a print issue of the mag hits.

Last week TRIPWIRE visited Titmouse, the animation studio behind everything from one of those “van tributes” and the psychedelic Total commercial to the online GI Joe Resolute cartoons with Hasbro to Cartoon Network’s death metal extravaganza Metalocalypse. But they’re also doing SO much more!

The company has expanded to add a games division stealing away Aaron Habibipour from the Guitar Hero games to work on their upcoming adventure Seven Haunted Seas. Additionally they’re doing the Black Panther cartoon series for BET, recently completed DJ and the Fro for MTV and just cut a 4-picture deal with Jeff Katz of Snakes on a Plane fame (OK, maybe that’s not fame per se but still).

Walking through the building you find it crammed to the gills with working animators:

They all had a Cintiq and many had headphones. They work directly in FLASH for the most part. Long gone are the days of hand drawn cels yet hand-drawing still goes on.

TRIPWIRE was informed that no animators were harmed in the making of this tour.

Even when posing for a picture instead of working the animators exude creativity.

Freddy Cristy and Jon Schnepp editing the show

TRIPWIRE also got to duck into the editing suite (ABOVE) to see Freddy Cristy and Metalocalypse director Jon Schnepp in motion, hard at work on an episode that will air in December 2009.

BELOW are Production Manager Ben Kalina and Sales and Marketing VP Sam Schoemann.

Ben was the one who suggested we talk to Titmouse over Indian food and great conversation at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con. He was not kidding about the explosion of creativity at this company. Meanwhile Sam was the man that guided the office tour before we sat down to talk turkey about the new directions (and there are many) that the company is taking.

It was an exhaustive tour over an exhausting several hours. TRIPWIRE spoke with a bunch of people there and did a lengthy interview (more later!) with VP and Creative Producer Keith Fay, newly minted Creative Director Aaron Habibipour and of course Sam who made all of it happen for us. We even got a few minutes with (co-)founder Shannon Prynoski!

The place is just hopping with creative energy and enthusiasm much of which TRIPWIRE will be sharing with you in the coming weeks ahead.

Three Image Amigos Sign at Golden Apple

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The Tyrese signing at Meltdown got all the press but Tripwire went to Golden Apple for a different Image signing (and not just because there was an Indian restaurant across the street!).

Three talented Image creators pooled their resources to sign books and entertain fans at their table, a post-San Diego glad-hand treat.

Andy Suriano, Glen Brunswick and Richard Starkings

From left to right they are:

Andy Suriano, cartoonist and illustrator of books such as the Joe Casey scribed Charlatan Ball.

Glen Brunswick author of Jersey Gods, a book that Wizard and others liked a lot. We’ll post a review soon.

Richard Starkings, owner of Comicraft, a man who needs little introduction if you read comics since most of those letters belong to him but whose series Elephantmen is pretty cool. Look for that review in coming days as well. The massive hardcover is quite a bit more than a convenient doorstop!

(It also doesn’t hurt that Ryan (GA’s proprieter) bought ten copies. Buy it from them if not from us!)
